Candidates stuck despite doing practice questions
How to Review NMLS Missed Questions
A missed-question review method for NMLS SAFE MLO candidates who want to turn wrong answers into a stronger study plan.
By SafeMLO Coach Editorial Team. Reviewed against official NMLS, CSBS, CFPB, and Prometric materials. Updated June 26, 2026.
How should I review missed NMLS questions?
Review missed NMLS questions by writing the tested rule, why your answer failed, the wording trap, and the next-time decision rule. Do this before taking more full practice exams.
Use a four-line review
For each miss, write four lines: the correct rule, why your answer failed, the trap in the wording, and the next-time decision rule.
This review method is slower than checking the answer key, but it prevents repeat mistakes.
Do not review only wrong questions
Also review high-confidence guesses and correct answers that felt shaky. These can become misses when the wording changes.
Near-pass candidates especially need to inspect questions they were sure about but got wrong.
Turn review into a study plan
If most misses are content gaps, return to the blueprint area. If most are wording traps, practice question reading. If most are math setup, drill formula selection before speed.
A missed-question log should tell you what to study next.

How long should missed-question review take?
Long enough that you can explain why the wrong answer was attractive and why it fails.
Should I redo missed questions?
Yes, but only after explaining the rule. Redoing from memory alone can create false confidence.
What if I keep missing the same topic?
Stop mixed practice temporarily and repair that topic with focused review.
